Burma Superstar > B Star

Looking forward to a delicious meal at Burma Superstar is always bittersweet - while the food may be really tasty, arriving any time after 5:30pm (F-Sun) almost always means waiting an hr+ to be seated.
Such was the case this evening. However this time, a new sign marked the doorway - 1.5 blocks away was another restaurant owned by the same people - B Star!
B Star (which has apparently been open for over a year) offers select favorites from its sibling including two of their best starters: Tea Leaf salad and Vegetarian Samosa soup. There was no wait, a lot more room inside, and an outdoor seating area. The menu is a fun mix of Asian-fusion flavors, although a bit on the (relatively) pricey side.
If you’re craving Burma Superstar, but can’t stomach the wait, B Star is a pleasant and convenient alternative.
What’s in season?

If you’ve ever wondered what kinds of local foods are currently in season (anywhere in the U.S.), Epicurious has an interactive Seasonal Ingredient Map to help you out.
Eating local, seasonal foods is better for the environment and makes for better eats.

Ristorante Milano
Last night, we ate at one of the highest (Yelp) rated Italian restaurants in San Francisco, Ristorante Milano.
Located in Nob Hill, this surprisingly little joint served up some of the best Italian cuisine I’ve had in SF.
Starting with our appetizers (Caprese salad and mixed Bruschetta), continuing through our entrees (a variety of pasta dishes and fish), and finishing with the desserts (tiramisu and a baked peach w/vanilla bean gelato), all of the food was fresh, full of flavor, and true to its Italian heritage.
The atmosphere was cozy, but somewhat noisy. While we had a few issues with dishes coming out staggered and late, the quality and flavor of the food made up for whatever other shortcomings there were. While parking was not necessarily a snap, it was far easier than trying to park in North Beach, and over all, the food was superior to all of the North Beach places I have tried.
I definitely recommend Ristorante Milano, but suggest getting a reservation ahead of time.

Wunder Brewing Co. - 1st impression
Its been 3 months since Eldo’s closed and finally a new micro-brewery has opened in the same space. Wunder Brewing Company opened on July 5, 2007. The Wunder Brewing Company originally started in 1898 and disappeared for the most part after the 1906 earthquake.
On only the second day of business, Wunder is heading in the right direction. The burger (beef, chicken, or veggie) is reasonably priced ($8.95) and includes a choice of cheeses, grilled onions, bacon, and steak fries. The only beer available as of Friday night was a yet-to-be-named pale ale. It had a nice flavor, reminiscent of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale with a slightly less intense finish.
The menu features “pub grub” with most dishes incorporating beer in the recipes; the prices are moderate. We are still waiting/hoping to see what kind of happy hour specials they will offer and looking for a larger variety of fresh beers.
In the end, I’m just happy to have a micro-brewery back in the neighborhood.
A wonderful, magical animal
It’s funny…for someone who doesn’t eat breakfast on a regular basis, I sure love breakfast foods!![]()
A few weeks ago I was out in the Mission looking for somewhere to have brunch/lunch. We ended up choosing the Pork Store Cafe, on a whim. This place, while maybe not the best ever, definitely knows how to serve up breakfast/brunch. I had the “Bird’s Nest” which was basically a scramble of eggs, bacon, cheese, and onions served on top of the “nest” (hash browns) with avocado on top and a side of toast.
There were plenty of choices, including vegetarian options (kinda ironic given the name of the joint) and very generous portions. Overall, if you find yourself in the Mission (or in the Haight) and in the mood for breakfast foods at any time of the day, check out the Pork Store Cafe.

Homer: Wait a minute wait a minute wait a minute. Lisa honey, are you saying you’re *never* going to eat any animal again? What about bacon?
Lisa: No.
Homer: Ham?
Lisa: No.
Homer: Pork chops?
Lisa: Dad! Those all come from the same animal!
Homer: [Chuckles] Yeah, right Lisa. A wonderful, magical animal.
