Weekend Update: Firefox edition

Stumbled across a couple of interesting/fun Firefox-related posts today:
- Slashdot - check out this flash video of some of the new features included in Mozilla’s upcoming release of Firefox 3
- Lifehacker - add 2000 NES games to Firefox with the FireNes extension
Dark Side of the Web

Firefox add-on Stylish allows users to apply custom styles to websites, mail clients, and even the browser itself. Changing styles is as easy as a single click at the developers’ online repository of user-created styles - userstyles.org.
Darker themes create less strain on a user’s eyes allowing for more comfortable extended use. Here are a few of my favorite dark customizations for Firefox:
- Firefox theme: NASA Night Launch
- Gmail style: Gmail Redesigned
- Google style: dark gray redesign
- Google Image style: dark gray redesign
- YouTube style: dark gray redesign
Be sure to install the Stylish add-on before trying to use the styles above (the theme installs separately).
See you on the dark side of the web…

Back that App up!
The Firefox Environment Backup Extension (FEBE) is an absolute must-have add-on for all Mozilla Firefox users. This extremely useful extension enables users to create scheduled backups of all things Firefox - themes, extensions, plug-ins, passwords, histories, etc.
FEBE takes things one step further with the Compact Library Extension Organizer (CLEO). This additional extension allows users to create custom Firefox add-on packs by merging multiple extensions and themes into one installable file.
Bottom line - FEBE+CLEO makes new and re-installations of FF a snap.

Enhanced image browsing with PicLens
PicLens has been around since at least last August. However, with the recent addition of a WordPress plugin (official | enhanced), this already terrific Firefox plugin just made my photo site, xploration.org, and a growing list of other online photo sites (Flickr, Picasa Web Albums, Facebook, MySpace, Google Images, etc) a lot more interesting.
This free software enables photographers and web developers to add an easy, attractive, and effective method to display their work online.
After installing this Firefox add-on, a little blue & white play button will appear after mousing over images on participating websites. By clicking play, a full screen photo slideshow is automatically rendered giving users a number of novel ways to view and explore images.
Although originally an exclusive add-on for Mozilla’s Firefox, PicLens is now available on Firefox (Windows), Firefox (Mac), Internet Explorer and Safari.
Firefox 3-D: no glasses required
Microsoft’s latest OS, Windows Vista, sports a new 3-D user-interface, Aero.
Ubuntu Linux trumps MS with its more sophisticated 3-D interface, Beryl.
Now Firefox is joining in the fun via Tab Effect.
This add-on does not offer much in the way of improved functionality, but rather adds a fun 3-D rotation when switching between tabs. Although still in the early stages of development, Tab Effect is a great example of what is yet to come.
